5 Things We Want to See in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2

Just last month we got a sneak peak at Marvel‘s Spider-Man 2, the highly anticipated sequel to 2018’s Marvel’s Spider-Man. In my personal opinion, the trailer gave us a whole lot to work with. We got a gritty, super threatening monologue from who many believe to be Kraven the Hunter. We got to see Peter Parker and Miles Morales both sporting new, even more high tech suits. And to top the teaser off, we got a pleasant surprise at the very end with an appearance from none other than Venom, who will be voiced by Tony Todd of Candyman fame.

Unfortunately, while this is all really exciting, we’ve got quite some time to wait. The game isn’t slated for release until an unspecified date in 2023. And while 2021 is almost over, I’ve already been going over in my head nonstop about what I’d want to see from the next installment. Insomniac established a great foundation with their first Spider-Man game. It was a true masterpiece and I feel that they can only go up from here. With Venom: Let There Be Carnage in theaters and Spider-Man: No Way Home later this year, the Spider-Man fever is in full effect. Here’s my wishlist of five things we’d like to see in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2.

1. More Dynamic Swinging Physics and Controls

It’s without a doubt that Insomniac’s Spider-Man game set a new standard for swinging. Every Spider-Man game that comes after it has to meet that threshold in some way. However, there were times where I wished things didn’t feel so streamlined. The stylistic and locomotive nuance to the swinging is what makes the unique experience of being Spider-Man. I feel that the swinging was a bit too easy, making it difficult to develop your own swing style. It would be great if Insomniac added some sort of advanced control scheme or physics setting for swinging geared towards more seasoned Spider-Man players. The DualSense controller has haptic feedback and adaptive triggers; it will be interesting to see how Insomniac applies these to the next game as compared to the remaster and Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales.

The ability to execute more advanced swinging tricks is also a must-have. All the swing tricks in the first game never felt necessary and overall felt kind of shoehorned in. The transitions from swinging to tricking weren’t very smooth in 2018. This was improved in the re-master and in Miles Morales, but it would be wonderful to see this system revamped so the way my Spider-Man swings feels more personable.

2. All The Suits From the First Game

Marvel’s Spider-Man had a collection of unlockable costumes unlike anything I’d ever seen in a superhero game before. Having access to so many different visual iterations of Spider-Man across different mediums was a true treat. With 42 suits available, I was never bored of how I looked in the game. Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is most likely set to capitalize on the amazing suit selection from the first game with different suits. However, seeing as they already have those models pre-made from the last game, I don’t see why we couldn’t get those suits in the sequel as well. The more suits, the better.

3. Peter in the Black Suit

In most Spider-Man iterations, Peter finds the symbiote and gains a new black suit. He has a good time with it, taking advantage of his new power until it starts to corrupt him. He rejects the symbiote, causing it to find another human (typically Eddie Brock) to bond with to create Venom. This causes Venom’s natural hatred for Spider-Man due to Peter’s rejection. While things go a bit differently in the Venom films, Insomniac seems to be taking their own route as well. Spoiler warning to those that haven’t finished the first game.

In this universe, the Venom symbiote appears to be some sort of secret experiment being kept hidden by Norman Osborn. More specifically, a means of keeping his ill son, Harry Osborn, alive. This probably means that Harry Osborn will bond with the symbiote this time around. Nevertheless, it would be great to see how this version of Peter would interact with the parasitic alien. Being able to switch between classic and black suit Spider-Man in earlier games has always made for dynamic, rewarding gameplay. Additionally, I would love to see how voice actor Yuri Lowenthal would interpret a darker, more aggressive Peter Parker.

4. Queens!

Who is Spider-Man without Forest Hills? At the end of the day, Peter Parker is just a kid from Queens. My favorite part of 2005’s Ultimate Spider-Man was the ability to travel over the Queensboro Bridge into Peter’s home stomping grounds. Swinging along low houses and feeling the general change in ambience in-between boroughs in New York City is something that’ll really elevate a full-fledged next-gen Spider-Man experience.

It’s surprising that Peter Parker’s neighborhood isn’t a bigger part of non-comic Spider-Man stories. The PlayStation 5’s processing power is the perfect opportunity to give Queens the spotlight it deserves. I’d ask for all five boroughs, but lets start with our hero’s home base. Aforementioned Venom voice actor Tony Todd is quoted as saying the game is “massive.” Considering this, a bigger map is a no-brainer.

5. The Green Goblin

We can argue on who Spider-Man’s true worst enemy is pretty extensively. Most people break it down to either Green Goblin or Venom. And since we’re definitely already getting Venom in Spider-Man 2, it only makes sense to capitalize on the conniving, calculated menace of Norman Osborn that was established in the first game. I see the Green Goblin as sort of a failsafe in telling great Spider-Man stories. How close Peter is to Norman and the way his influence intersects in different areas of Peter’s life creates a lot of possibilities for the developers and story team. We know Osborn is a threat in this universe, now all we need is to see him get on the glider.

There have been several teases for Norman to become the infamous villain. Both ending sequences featuring the character tint him in a green glow. While this is from the vat containing Harry, it’s clearly foreshadowing a fate for the former Mayor. The fact he collaborates with so many other villains, be it Martin Li, Otto Octavius, or Silver Sablinova doesn’t help his case. Even in the end of Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, you can see him with Dr. Curt Connors, who may eventually become The Lizard. If Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is going to succeed, it’s going to need multiple fresh villains to take on.

Anyway, that’s our list. While we still know very little about the project, we couldn’t stop smiling after watching the reveal trailer. In case you missed it, you can check out the teaser trailer for the sequel below.
