Love Narita Boy? Willing to Spend $11,000 for an Arcade Cabinet of it?
In an interesting announcement, Team17 and Studio Koba have made a one of a kind arcade cabinet for their hit indie game, Narita Boy. Attempting to “save the arcade world,” the Narita Boy: Techno Edition is now available for one lucky buyer. Selling at $11,000/£7,999/€9,185, all proceeds for the purchase go to charity at the British Games Institute, going towards their game preservation projects. The Techno Edition will also come with an augmented reality pin set from Pinfinity, a custom controller, the original game soundtrack, a gift box full of merchandise, and even the game on all available platforms. Not a bad deal for a charitable cause.
While the Techno Edition is technically one of a kind, it’s because it’s the only unit made for private ownership. Three other arcade cabinets will also be on display at various around the world. This includes The Strong: The National Museum of Play in New York, The National Videogame Museum in Sheffield, UK, and Arcade Vintage: Museo del VideoJuego in Alicante, Spain. The Pinfinity pin set is also notable for the augmented reality features through Pinfinity’s app. Using the app, the pins will display scenes from the game and even play some of the soundtrack as well.
“After collaborating with Pinfinity on the Worms collection earlier this year, we were very pleased to have the opportunity to work with them again, not only on the Narita Boy augmented reality pins, but the Narita Boy: Techno Edition as well,” said Mich Davis, Head of Marketing at Team17. “The edition is a unique opportunity for a retro games fan to enjoy Narita Boy, as well as support the incredible work of our Saving The Arcade World partners, and we couldn’t be happier to host the sale via Pinfinity.”
“We are excited to be working with Team17 and Studio Koba to bring Narita Boy and the Digital Kingdom to life through our augmented reality pins,” said Caleb Paullus, Co-Founder and CCO at Pinfinity. “We love the game and its retro arcade vibes and hope the fans will be excited at what surprises they find when they receive and scan their limited edition pin set.”
The Narita Boy: Techno Edition is available exclusively at Pinfinity’s web store. If you have the means to pay, and you want to own a rare piece of gaming tech, this might be your big opportunity. If not, perhaps you’ll be able to see one of the other cabinets on display at the museums. What do you think? Do you think more studios should do this? Let us know in the comments below!
