Free Comic Book Day 2021 Has Lots of Gaming Love

Free Comic Book Day, the annual tradition of providing free comics for fans young and old, is not taking place on its usual day this year. Normally on the first Saturday of May, the event for 2021 has been shifted to August 14th due to the pandemic. While the date may have shifted, the support is still overwhelming, and that includes several video game options too. Take a look at what’s coming for some of your favorite gaming franchises here.

UDON Entertainment

Street Fighter V: Back to School Special

UDON Entertainment is no stranger to Free Comic Book Day, and this year makes no difference with a new Street Fighter V comic. In the Back to School Special, the story will focus on both academics and martial arts. The story will include favorites like Sakura, Karin, Makoto, Elena, and Ibuki, but will also feature newcomer Akira (Rival Schools). Given that Akira will be one of the new fighters for Season 5 of Street Fighter V, this will be a fitting companion for the DLC. The story will be written by Matt Moylan with interior artwork by Genzoman, and cover art by Hanzo Steinbach.

IDW Publishing

Sonic The Hedgehog 30th Anniversary

IDW Publishing continues to deliver new Sonic the Hedgehog stories, and they keep that momentum going for Free Comic Book Day. The story will focus on Sonic’s past as he collects Chaos Emeralds while celebrating the hedgehog’s 30th anniversary. Fan favorites like Tails, Knuckles, and Amy will be present in the story. It will also feature classic characters like Mighty and Ray, as well as other special guests. Tracy Yardley will handle the cover art with Aaron Hammerstrom and Reggie Graham on interior art. As for the stories, they’ll be handled by writers like Ian Flynn and Gale Galligan. A hardcover deluxe edition will also release in October.

TOKYOPOP

Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla & Dynasty

With Assassin’s Creed Valhalla last year, Chinese platform AC.QQ started a webcomic by Feng Zi Su. This story tells the tale of three original characters for the series, the brothers Jarl, Ulf, and Björn Stensson. TOKYOPOP has acquired the rights to distribute this story in English as well as a new story called Assassin’s Creed Dynasty. For Free Comic Book Day, they’ll be producing a preview for both stories in one convenient book. Assassin’s Creed Dynasty comes from the talented duo of Xu Xianzhe and Zhang Xiao. Kae Winters will be in charge of localizing both stories for the preview.

Titan Comics

Life is Strange

Titan Comics is doing a new Life is Strange comic that seems to be based on the first game, but tells a new story written by Emma Vieceli. The story will feature Max, Chloe, and Rachel and will lead into a new arc for the comic series. This entry will also feature the first comic appearance a brand new character who will feature heavily in the Life is Strange universe this year. Perhaps we’ll see Alex Chen from Life is Strange: True Colors? The comic will also feature artwork from Claudia Leonardi and Andrea Izzo, though has yet to be finalized.

Dark Horse Comics

Critical Role: The Mighty Nein Origins/The Witcher

While Dark Horse Comics is featuring Critical Role for Free Comic Book Day, it appears that they’re also including a story from the world of CD PROJEKT RED’s The Witcher. Critical Role will feature a short story from the adventures of the Mighty Nein by Jody Houser with Tyler Walpole handling the artwork. As for The Witcher, we’ll get an original story giving new insight on the series protagonist Geralt. In collaboration with CD PROJEKT RED, the comic will include the talents of Bartosz Sztybor, Nil Vendrell, Miguel Muerto, and Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou.

As you can see, not all of the comic covers have their final artwork. Either way, this appears to be five high quality works for gaming fans of all types. You can check out the rest of the comics available on the official Free Comic Book Day website. What do you think? Will you be picking up any of these comics? Let us know in the comments below! Free Comic Book Day will take place on August 14th, 2021. Check your local comic book shops for participation and be sure to support them.
