Announced on the Square Enix Presents digital presentation, the newest entry in the Life is Strange series has been revealed. Life is Strange: True Colors, developed by Deck Nine Games, the team behind Life is Strange: Before the Storm, provides a new story in the franchise. They’ll get assistance from Square Enix External Studios as they target a September 2021 release. Most surprising is the fact that for the first time, this entry in the franchise won’t be episodic. Life is Strange: True Colors will release all at once for fans to experience at launch. Check out the announcement trailer below!
The trailer starts us off introducing us to the new protagonist, Alex Chen, played by Erika Mori. Taking place in Haven Springs, players will use her new psychic ability of Empathy. Using this ability, she can manipulate the emotions, absorb them, and even experience them for herself. These emotions manifest themselves as colorful auras, hence the title True Colors. All her life, Alex suppresses this power, considering it like a curse. After the so-called “accidental” death of her brother, she embraces this gift to uncover a mystery surrounding his death. After the announcement trailer, musician and social media star Maia, aka mxmtoon, hosts the Life is Strange: True Colors presentation. She also provides Alex’s singing voice. You can check out more of the game in the gallery below.
The soundtrack will feature several artists, including new songs from mxmtoon and Novo Amor. This includes mxmtoon’s cover of Radiohead’s “Creep” as Alex sings it. There will also be other tracks from Radiohead, Phoebe Bridgers, Gabrielle Aplin, and more. The game has been in development since 2017, starting right after Life is Strange: Before the Storm. Life is Strange: True Colors will release on September 10th, 2021 for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series S|X, PC, and Google Stadia. There will be three editions, including the Standard Edition, Deluxe Edition, and Ultimate Edition. Those that preorder will get four additional outfits for Alex.
“It has been such an honor to return to the vibrant, emotive, and impactful world of Life is Strange,” Says Deck Nine Games Vice President, Jeff Litchford. “We are delighted to share this new story with you: a story of empathy, human connection, and the struggle to find a place to call home. All of the advancements in storytelling, development technology, and premium voice acting that we have made since Life is Strange: Before the Storm will allow players to be more immersed in the compelling world of Life is Strange: True Colors than ever before.”
Also announced during the presentation is the Life is Strange Remastered Collection. This release features remasterings of the original Life is Strange as well as Before the Storm. The game will have enhancements to both the visuals and the animation for a release later this year. It will also come included in the Life is Strange: True Colors Ultimate Edition. Both Life is Strange: True Colors and Life is Strange Remastered Collection will release both digitally and physically later this year. For more details, you can head to the official site here.
