Here’s a Refresher on El Shaddai: Ascension of the Metatron

Ten years ago, UTV Ignition Games released El Shaddai: Ascension of the Metatron on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. UTV Ignition Games was shut down, but Director Sawaki Takeyasu managed to secure the El Shaddai rights in 2013. Well now, courtesy of Crim, it’s coming back, this time to PC via Steam. With a release targeting sometime this year, Crim has released new screenshots and information regarding the PC port. The game was initially reported to release in mid-April, but Producer Sawaki Takeyasu says that is incorrect. Either way, you’re free to take a look at the information below.

El Shaddai: Ascension of the Metatron combines multiple genre elements with its rich narrative and a glorious anime style graphical presentation that changes dramatically as the player progresses through a mesmerizing experience. With visual novel games on the rise, what El Shaddai offers goes far beyond these restrictions. Action, strategy and platforming are just a few of the challenges and obstacles that unfold.

Inspired by the apocryphal Book of Enoch, the story follows a scribe seeking seven fallen angels to prevent a great flood from destroying mankind. He’s helped in his quest by Lucifel, a guardian angel in charge of the protection of the world who exists outside of the flow of time. Lucifel also gains assistance from four Archangels: Michael, Gabriel, Raphael and Uriel.

Let the Battle Commence…..

One important aspect of El Shaddai is combat, with a plethora of moves and actions that players must learn to be able to progress. Guard break, for example, is effective against enemies using stronger defenses. Counter attack, unarmed attack, double jumping, dive attack and special airborne attack are a few agile and subtle moves. Stealing weapons,  along with a combination of special moves, add an intuitive learning curve to the game. Add boost skills and you’ll see why combat in El Shaddai adds another dimension to the exploration and interactive journey. There are many surprises in the story, including the backdrops and the cast of amazing characters.

On the Level…..

Enoch moves through various levels in each chapter, battling enemies along the way. There are multiple types of stages to take on as well. Movement stages are where the player controls Enoch, performing various actions as you make your way through the stage. Enemies may appear at times, resulting in combat within the movement stage. At other times, they’ll switch the location to a battle stage. Battling in movement stages use Enoch’s abilities to defeat the enemies or avoid combat, as you proceed through the level. Finally, action stages require carefully timed and executed jumps to progress. Leap your way through the level carefully to avoid falling.

Combat – Staying Alive………

The complexities of combat extend themselves further with the weapons chosen. There are three types of weapons, each with their own qualities. Each weapon is superior or inferior to another, working like rock, paper, scissors. Choosing the right one is crucial to success. Enoch’s health represents itself with the condition of his armor, consisting of five parts each with their own endurance levels.

Original El Shaddai Director Sawaki Takeyasu is returning to produce the PC port. Takeyasu’s past works include the likes of Devil May Cry, Okami, Infinite Space, and The Lost Child. When speaking about the PC port, he had this to say: “The complexities and intricacies of El Shaddai can be seen, played and viewed on many levels, and enjoyment and satisfaction can be achieved by everyone and more importantly each time you play and immerse yourself within the world you will see and maybe learn something new which will help you complete the journey!”

You can check out more screenshots in the gallery below.

Hopefully the PC port will see a release sooner rather than later. Either way, are you looking forward to the upcoming PC port? Let us know in the comments below!
