Norm Spencer, Voice of X-Men’s Cyclops, Has Passed Away
After the tragic loss of Chadwick Boseman last Friday, the Marvel universe has now lost another legend. Norm Spencer, known for his voice work as Cyclops on X-Men: The Animated Series, has passed away at the age of 62. Confirmed in a tweet by fellow voice actor Cal Dodd (Wolverine), the news broke earlier today.
While Spencer was known for his roles in animation, he also has credit as Cyclops in multiple arcade games. Being the voice from the animated series, Capcom utilized his talents to play him in four fighting games. This includes X-Men: Children of the Atom, X-Men vs. Street Fighter, Marvel vs. Capcom, and Marvel vs. Capcom 2: New Age of Heroes. Pro fighting game player Justin Wong made great use of the character in Marvel vs. Capcom 2. This includes an epic comeback against Yipes at EVO 2007.
Wong posted a small tribute on Twitter after hearing news of his passing.
Norm Spencer also voiced Drax the Destroyer in the short-lived Silver Surfer animated series, among other roles. The fighting game community will always remember his “Optic Blast” and what his character brought to the games. Rest easy, leader of the X-Men.
