WayForward is Bringing Some of Their Classics to Modern Consoles
In case you missed it, WayForward Technologies has announced that a handful of their classic titles are coming getting revived. Shantae and it’s sequel, Shantae: Risky’s Revenge, as well as Xtreme Sports, are all coming out for Nintendo Switch. Risky’s Revenge is also coming to Xbox One as well.
Shantae and Xtreme Sports both had 3DS Virtual Console releases, but it’s nice to see them come to Switch. Even better, both titles are being reproduced as authentic Game Boy Color cartridges, courtesy of Limited Run Games. They’ll be fully compatible with the original handheld and will likely be great for collectors. Preorders for Shantae will start in September while Xtreme Sports preorders open in October. If you want a physical version but don’t have a Game Boy Color, the Switch is also getting a physical release of both titles.
WayForward creative director and Shantae co-creator Matt Bozon had this to day about the releases: “Over the last decade, Shantae has built up a thriving fanbase, which is a dream come true! Unfortunately, this also means that the majority of Shantae fans missed out when it came to owning a copy of her first adventure, which had a very low production run back in 2002. These days buying a copy on the collector’s market could cost upwards of a thousand dollars! Thanks to Limited Run Games, everyone will have a chance to own a copy of the original Shantae, along with Xtreme Sports, our first foray into handheld gaming, which laid the groundwork for Shantae. Both Shantae and Xtreme Sports are lost gems that you won’t want to miss!”
The Shantae series not only recently celebrated it’s 20th anniversary, but it also released the fifth game in the series, Shantae and the Seven Sirens. It feels only natural that WayForward also uses this chance to release Shantae: Risky’s Revenge. Unlike the other games, Risky’s Revenge will be a port of the PC Director’s Cut. Since Risky’s Revenge was originally a DSiWare game, it won’t have a physical DS cartridge release. It will however have a digital Xbox One release, but the Nintendo Switch will launch both digitally and physically. The physical release will again come courtesy of Limited Run Games. Shantae: Risky’s Revenge – Director’s Cut will be available for preorder this September. The game is currently available for PlayStation 4 and Steam, but will also have a Windows 10 release.
We expect to hear more about the Limited Run releases soon, so keep your eyes on WayForward’s website. For now, the digital release of Risky’s Revenge is set for $9.99. We expect Shantae and Xtreme Sports to be about the same. Are you looking forward to the releases of these classics? Let us know in the comments below!
