Byleth Joins the Roster for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate
After announcing the January Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Direct, we finally know the identity of our mystery fighter. That fighter is none other than Byleth from Fire Emblem: Three Houses. Watch below as Game Director Masahiro Sakurai demonstrates Byleth in the 40 minute presentation! Byleth will release on January 28th, 2020.
Byleth comes in both male and female variations, and wields a sword, axe, bow, and lance. Sakurai joked that some would be surprised by this reveal, likely because there are already several characters representing Fire Emblem. People were looking at Sakurai’s pose thinking that he was holding up a “3”, but it was actually “17” in binary.
Byleth has low mobility and has a weak throw compared to other fighters. Each directional attack uses a different Relic weapon for attacks. For up and dash attacks, Byleth will use a whip sword, the Sword of the Creator. Side special attacks will use Areadbhar, a lance Relic, which will give solid reach. For down attacks, Byleth will use Amyr, the axe Relic. One of those attacks is a powerful axe strike that gives Byleth super armor and the ability to pass through platforms. Neutral attacks will use the Relic bow, Failnaught. This weapon can be charged and can unleash a powerful ranged attack.
For the color schemes, they’re based on other Fire Emblem: Three Houses characters. Colors one and two are the male and female variations respectively. Color three is based on Dimitri, four on Edelgard, and five on Claude, the three house leaders. The sixth color is based on Sothis, the guide that communicates with Byleth throughout the plot of Fire Emblem: Three Houses. The final two colors are based on a specific plot moment in the game, where Byleth has a different hair color. We won’t spoil it for you here if you haven’t reached that point yourself.
Byleth’s stage is Garreg Mach Monastery, which travels through several areas from the setting. These areas are the Marketplace, the Reception Hall, the Bridge, and the Cathedral. Characters from Fire Emblem: Three Houses make cameo appearances in the background of the stage. Of course, the stage also comes with music from the game, including “The Edge of Dawn”. 11 tracks total are being added to the game, and they can be used on all Fire Emblem stages.
Sakurai also revealed that the next Fighters Pass will become available on January 28th, the same day Byleth releases. This time, there will be six additional fighters, planned to be distributed over the next two years. Sakurai states that all the characters have been decided, so he asks that people don’t send him requests for the next wave of DLC.
What do you think? Are you excited to have another Fire Emblem character? Were you hoping for someone else? Luckily, we have at least six more fighters on the way, so there’s always hope. Let us know your thoughts in the comments below!
