Zombies are a well-known factor in any field of entertainment, especially in the world of video games. This time we are facing the recent release of They Are Billions, the work of the Sevillian studio Numantian Games that proposes to overcome the huge hordes of zombies in a real-time strategy title with certain tower defense touches.
The main idea that the game poses is quite clear and concise: mount defenses to avoid defeat. You’ll face a scenario where you must fortify while also obtaining the necessary resources or materials to build or improve your fortifications. You must not delay training the combat units, as they’ll be needed to fight later against the undead hordes. Immediately after, you’ll have to face the threat as it’s thrown at you. You’ll start with one map, and you must come out victorious to unlock the following one. Once unlocked, players can choose whichever map they wish. In the same way, you can configure the level of the infected population, which increases the difficulty. You can even customize the difficulty when it comes to modifying the duration of the game. The longer it lasts, the more time is offered to form your colonies and defenses.
Even with all the customization options we mentioned, we must emphasize that this isn’t exactly an easy game. Carrying out careful work when assembling your defenses is essential to avoid future problems during the attack of the hordes. That’s why you can’t lose sight of the different corners of the map. The least protected place is the one that waves of enemies could use to destroy you and send you to a game over. Undoubtedly, it’s an experience that becomes addictive when you play with the right game options.
It should be noted that the console title has fewer game modes than the computer version. Here you only have the survival mode, which is really the main claim to They Are Billions. You also get the challenges of the week, offering a chance to overcome the scores of the community. Hopefully, in the future they will add the campaign mode so that all players can enjoy these two modes regardless of the platform on which they play.
From the beginning, we realize that this is a video game clearly designed for a PC gamer. The menus and game mechanics are very focused on the use of the keyboard and mouse. The adaptation to the command is well developed and allows you to configure different buttons to use shortcuts. Even so, its use is not as agile or practical. Despite the work to adapt the command system, it’s true that we’re left with the desire for a deeper system. Other strategy titles like Halo Wars 2 or XCOM 2 have done well to adapt to consoles, among others.
On an artistic level, we are facing a fairly discreet proposal. One that is very striking and correct considering the subject of the title. The sound section bets on a soundtrack that introduces even more tension in the body, as well as a series of sound effects that accompany the attacks of the waves of zombies. Overall, the soundtrack works well during each session.
They Are Billions began to attract the attention of the community thanks to the early access for PC. Finally reaching the console community, it grants access to a lot more players. Unfortunately, that comes at a cost with a cut in content with respect to the PC version. We hope that the game modes that are missing from these versions will be added soon. That being said, if you want a strategy title and you also like the zombie theme, you can stop looking. They Are Billions is the proposal you were looking for.
