E3 2019 | Square Enix E3 Conference Summary

Square Enix presented their upcoming lineup at E3 2019 for the first time in front of a live audience. The result was perhaps their most electrifying presentation yet. Although there were few surprises, the ones we did get were noteworthy.

Final Fantasy VII Remake showcased real time gameplay for the first time. Despite its more action-oriented direction, the game brings back staples such as the ATB meter. When the meter is full players can enter “tactical mode” where time freezes and players can either use items or perform special moves. There is also a quick-menu option for those who want their action quick and flowing. Square Enix showed the first boss encounter against the Scorpion mech, featuring Cloud and Barrett, showing characters utilizing signature moves and also taking cover behind debris. The remake is finally slated to release on March 3rd, 2020. There’s also going to be a Deluxe and Collectors Editions available for pre-order.

Square Enix showed a trailer for their remastering of Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles. The game will feature online multiplayer, voice acting, and will arrive later this winter to PS4, Switch, PC and Mobile. They also announced The Last Remnant Remastered, released originally on PS4 last December, coming to Switch immediately after the conference.

Dragon Quest Builders 2 will feature online Co-Op that allows 4 builders to mold the world around them. The game is slated to release on July 12th on both PS4 and Switch. Last year’s Dragon Quest XI is heading to the Switch under the moniker Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age Definitive Edition. It will feature a new soundtrack and a new companion. The game is slated to release this fall.

Square Enix will also publish Circuit Racer, a top-down indie racer, for the PS4, Switch and PC in 2020. Square Enix also announced that Final Fantasy music is going to be available for streaming on a variety on services like Spotify under the label of “Square Enix Music”. Final Fantasy XIV: Shadowbringers will bring new classes to the cult classic with new races to play as and areas to explore. The expansion will launch at July 2nd.

In a surprise announcement, Square Enix is bringing Romancing SaGa 3 and SaGa Scarlet Grace to the west for the first time. The former is a remake of a classic Super Famicom RPG whereas the latter is the newest title in the series celebrating its 25th anniversary. The games are slated for release later this year on a variety of platforms.

Kingdom Hearts ReMind, the expansion pack for early 2019’s hit, will feature new playable characters, Aqua, Roxas and Riku, as well as new story cutscenes. It will release later in the winter.

People Can Fly showcased their newest creation, Outriders. It is a post-apocalyptic shooter in which its lead characters can perform supernatural abilities like shooting fire. The game is slated for release on PC, PS4 and Xbox One around summer 2020.

A new action-rpg, Oninaki, was revealed with a surprising early release of August 22nd 2019 for PS4, Switch and PC. Final Fantasy VIII after a shocking absent for years, is finally remastered like its PS1 brethren. Featuring higher resolution, cleaner UI and improved cutscene visuals. The new game is coming to all consoles and PC later this year.

Crystal Dynamics’ long awaited Avengers game has been revealed after years of speculation. The game, simply called Marvel’s Avengers, showcased a brand new trailer. It takes place in a different universe than the MCU, and featuring the team moving over to their west coast HQ in San Francisco dealing with a major threat. The game’s cast featuring icons such as Troy Baker (Bruce Banner), Travis Willingham (Thor), Laura Bailey (Black Widow), Jeff Schine (Captain America) and Nolan North (Tony Stark\Iron Man). The game will also feature 4-player online co-op and additional heroes will be offered at no charge. The game will be out on PS4, Xbox One, Stadia and PC. The PS4 version will have early beta access and future unannounced bonuses. The game will be released on May 15th, 2020.
