I don’t think I’ve ever sworn out loud more than I did while playing the game Celeste on the Nintendo Switch. Maybe it was the controls which felt a little too restricting on the Switch (joy-cons and Pro controller). Maybe it was the tranquility of the game’s music lulling my senses, resulting in a quick death. Or maybe it’s that the game is extremely difficult, and gets more difficult the further you go. On that note, I’m convinced that the B-Sides and C-Sides in Celeste were created by the Devil himself.
Despite this, in the end (like Celeste), I persevered and was able to beat the game/climb that mountain. And just like the thematic element within the game, my cursing levels climbed higher and higher. Words like “shoot” and “darn” quickly gave way to, well, words that I’m not even sure are real, and if they are real, should probably never be repeated. In my own reflection (again, like Celeste), my feelings and experience were reminiscent of the one and only Buster “Motherboy” Bluth.
