KOEI TECMO America recently shared a wealth of new information surrounding the storyline and gameplay of Toukiden 2, the upcoming sequel to the popular demon-hunting role-playing game, Toukiden. This sequel is set to arrive on March 21, 2017 for the PlayStation 4, PlayStation Vita, and Steam.
Within the game, the seemingly peaceful village of Mahoroba is riven by internal conflict.Despite being tasked with the protection of the Shrine Maiden, Kagura, the town’s two rival clans (the Samurai and the Imperial Guard) clash for dominance, thus jeopardizing the safety and future of the sanctuary settlement. The Holy Mount has decided, in an attempt to defuse the tension, to send in their own force of Slayers. Unfortunately, their presence feels more like a threat than a path to a peaceful solution. Now people wonder; Will the new Slayer who has mysteriously appeared on the outskirts of Mahoroba unite the irate guardians, or will the devastating events that tore the once-allied factions apart prevail and usher in the end of humanity?
You will be forced to confront internal and external conflicts alike, putting both your battle skills and strategic acumen to the ultimate test. Toukiden 2 will give you a multitude of diverse weapons to suit your combat style, such as swords, spears, knives, gauntlets, chain-sickles (kusarigama), bows, clubs, polearms, and even rifles. Two series-first weapons types will also make their debut; The Sword & Shield, a combination offering up both offense and defense, as well as the Chain Whip, allowing for fast-paced maneuvers that can rip apart Oni flesh quite quickly. Each armament can be utilized for light and heavy attacks, and also offers up special abilities that can be combined with the versatile Demon Hand to help you balance the scales of power as you battle Oni.
Weapons can be personalized and enhanced with the assistance of the freed souls of fallen heroes, known as Mitama. As you defeat larger foes, you will free the Mitama from their Oni captors, utilizing them to empower the player’s weapon, armor, or Demon Hand with boosts in Attack, Defense, Speed, Healing, and Control. This last element is new to the series, and specializes in summoning Oni to fight for you. Once summoned, the subservient Oni will attack incoming foes and act as a decoy to help escape an enemy’s grasp. That said, you can only equip three Mitama at one time, and thus choosing the best combination before battle can provide quite an importatnt tactical edge to balance the scales.
