Bluehole and PLAYERUNKNOWN partner to create PLAYERUNKNOWN’S BATTLEGROUNDS
Bluehole and PLAYERUNKNOWN were excited to reveal their new partnership as they team up to develop a new standalone Battle Royale game, known as PLAYERUNKNOWN’S BATTLEGROUNDS. This will be an open world strategic shooter, and is set to expand the core Battle Royale experience into a competitive player vs. player game.
The title has been created with Unreal Engine 4, and will support up to 64 players on the remote island for a winner-takes-all showdown that emphasizes strategic gameplay as much as shooting skills. In this last-man-standing battle, players will need to try to locate weapons, vehicles, and supplies as they engage in a fight to the death.
As part of the collaborative development process, PLAYERUNKNOWN has relocated from Ireland to Bluehole’s Korean HQ in order to serve as creative director at Bluehole while still maintaining contact with the community that has supported his projects.
Brendan Greene, also known as PLAYERUNKNOWN, stated, “I’ve always wanted to create a standalone game based on the mod I created for the ARMA series, and working with Bluehole gives me the resources and creative freedom to build the experience I’ve always envisioned. We have a great development team in place, and our goal is to create a realistic open world experience with the deep gameplay and strong combat mechanics.”
Once the match begins in this new game, players will have neither items nor weapons. They will need to utilize strategies, such as commandeering a vehicle to discover a high-value location, searching for weapons, or other diversified tactics as they struggle to become the last man standing. Every weapon within the game will feature attachments, such as sights and suppressors. Players will also have access to both road and off-road vehicles.

For a title that we’ll be publishing across the globe, it made perfect sense to partner with the creator who has a proven track record of making gameplay that fans love, and the collaboration is going great—we’ve already been working hard for months on PLAYERUNKNOWN’S BATTLEGROUNDS.”
