The Pokémon Company and Niantic reveal new details for Pokémon GO
The Pokémon Company and Niantic, Inc. were excited to reveal new details regarding the upcoming mobile game, Pokémon GO, including an early user test limited to the United States which is currently ongoing while the title is still in active development. Though this test is limited to the United States, they noted that tests are also under way in Japan, Australia, and New Zealand.
As you explore the world around you, Pokémon GO will allow you to find and catch over one hundred different Pokémon. When you approach one hidden in the wild, your phone will notify you, granting you the chance to engage and catch the Pokémon by utilizing the touch screen to throw a Poké Ball. These, along with other special items, can be found at PokéStops, located at interesting places such as public art installations, historical markers, and monuments.
As you play, you will be encouraged to join one of three different teams and engage in Gym battles with other teams. After joining a team, you will gain the ability to assign your Pokémon to Gyms, which can be found at real locations across the world.
As any Pokémon fan knows, battling is essential to a Pokémon title, and Pokémon GO is no different. You will be able to battle with the Pokémon you have caught in order to gain control of a Gym. You will need to utilize your own Pokémon’s attacks and dodge incoming attacks by swiping left and right on the screen. If you defeat the defending Pokémon, you will reduce the Gym’s Prestige, and, once the Prestige reaches zero, the defending team loses control of the Gym, and the victor’s Pokémon can be assigned to defend it.
Defenders can increase their Gym’s Prestige and level by training their Pokémon with other defending Pokémon. As the Gym reaches higher levels, the defending team will be able to assign more Pokémon to defend it.
Players can also team up with friends to battle together against a rival Gym and take it down faster.
You will interact with the world through an in-game Trainer avatar, whose appearance can be customized with a variety of differnet clothes and accessories. This customized Trainer image will appear on the map as you move about, on your profile page, and in Gyms that you/your team controls.
Finally, a portable device known as Pokémon GO Plus will allow Pokémon GO players to enjoy the game without looking at the smartphone. This device connects to a smartphone via Bluetooth and notifies the player about in-game events, such as the appearance of a nearby Pokémon, via an LED and vibration. You can also catch Pokémon and perform other simple actions by pressing the button on the device.
