The Pokémon Company and Niantic Incorporated were excited to reveal new features for the upcoming mobile release, Pokémon GO, which is set to launch later this year on the App Store and Google Play. This title will encourage fans to search the real world for Pokémon, and an early user test (limited to Japan only) is planned while the title is still in active development.
In Pokémon GO, you will explore your surroundings to find and catch wild Pokémon hiding in our midst. Some of these wild Pokémon will only appear in their native environments. For example, you may only find Water-type Pokémon near lakes and oceans.
As you wander the world, your phone will vibrate once it detects a nearby Pokémon, and users can then utilize their touch screen to throw a Poké Ball to attempt to catch it. For those wondering, these, as well as other special items, can be found at PokéStops located at interesting places, like public art installations, historical markers, and monuments. One of these items includes Pokémon Eggs, which will hatch once you have walked a certain distance.
As you progress through Pokémon GO, your Trainer level will increase, thus allowing you to both capture more powerful Pokémon and gain access to even more items. If you manage to catch the same species of Pokémon on multiple occasions, there is a chance that some can evolve.
Players will be encouraged to join of of three different teams and engage in Gym battles with other teams. Once you have joined a team, you will gain the ability to assign your Pokémon to an empty Gym, which, like the PokéStops, can be found at real locations in the world. Only one Pokémon per player can be placed at any given Gym, requiring teams to work together to build a strong defense, as a Gym can be challenged by the other two teams once claimed by one.
Finally, they confirmed that players will be able to unlock achievement medals by completing a variety of challenges.
“With real-life surroundings providing a backdrop for encounters with wild Pokémon,” they stated on the official press release, “this unique Pokémon game represents the next generation of Niantic’s “Real World” gaming platform, which combines mobile location technology and Augmented Reality to create a gaming experience that motivates players to go outside and explore the world around them.”
