Pokémon Day celebrates 20 years of Pokémon

Back on February 27, 1996, gamers were asked to choose between Bulbasaur, Squirtle, and Charmander for the first time, kicking off the start of the Pokémon brand, which has continued for two decades on multiple platforms. Now, 20 years later on Saturday, February 27, 2016, Pokémon Day will help fans continue the adventure with special events and activities.

One way fans can show their spirit is via the Pokémon Photo Booth application, that can be downloaded for free from the App Store. Fans can then customize their portraits and add captions in the style of the classic Pokémon games, then share them on social media sites or even use them to create Pokémon-themed profile photos. Google Play users will soon gain access to this application as well.

Furthermore, on Friday, February 26 at 7:00AM PST, there will be a special Pokémon Direct presentation.

Also announced was that Twitch will feature a massive Pokémon event beginning at 10:00AM on Saturday, February 27. Fans interested will be able to view Pokémon discussion, gameplay, and more, with a 24 hour animation marathon kicking off at 6:00PM PST.

Those interested can even attend a special Pokémon 20th celebration at the newly renovated Nintendo NY store at 10 Rockefeller Plaza in New York City. Those that do on February 27 can participate in special Pokémon-themed activities and take a photo with the iconic Pikachu from noon to 3:00PM EST.

Finally, retailers around the world will also help celebrate the 20 year anniversary. Participating Toys R Us locations will give out special foil Pokémon TCG cards featuring both Pikachu and Magikarp from the Pokémon TCG: Generations expansion, as well as a Pokémon activity book and a poster of the original 151 Pokémon, while supplies last. Fans will also be able to purchase an exclusive Generations-themed binder at Toys R Us.

GameStop will be offering up a Mythical Pokémon poster with the purchase of any Pokémon product, as long as supplies last.

For more details on Pokémon Day, check out the official site. Furthermore, those who visit the site throughout the year can find information about monthly Mythical Pokémon distributions, retail events, special products, and even messages from some of the franchise’s biggest fans.
