Red Bull Battle Grounds Starcraft II tournament results

teams_group_2The 2015 StarCraft II eSports tournament series had kicked off thist with the special Archon Mode, the first to require two players to control one army. During this tournament, battles were intense as Chris “HuK” Loranger and Jang “MC” Min Chul Park aimed to use their friendship to claim the title of “Red Bull Battle Grounds StarCraft II Champions”, as well as a $15,000 prize.

To successfully gain these prizes, however, HuK and MC would need to face some rather powerful competition. One of the most powerful opponents was, perhaps, the pairing of 2014 champion Choi “Bomber” Ji Sung, who was facing his final battle before being sanctioned into enlistment in the Korean Army, and Mun “MMA” Seong Won, who eliminated him from the BlizzCon 2014 finals.

The other two teams comprised of gamers seeking redemption against Bomber. The first, Kim “viOLet” Dong Hwan and Maru “MaSa” Kim sought redemption after he had defeated them both in 2014’s Battle Grounds. Park “DongRaeGu (DRG)” Soo Ho and Yoo “True” Ki Sung also had lost to Bomber in the past and sought vengeance against their powerful opponent.

MC ha actually retired before, and is widely recognized as one of the most successful StarCraft II players of all time. He came out of retirement upon his friend’s, HuK’s, request, however. HuK had desired to take a title with his long-standing friend, and MC decided to attempt to oblige, and so the two entered the Battle Grounds to see if they could be successful.

The performance of Bomber and MMA was unclear, as this was the first time they played together as Archon teammates. They quickly used high risk and speed to snatch the first win from HuK and MC.

HuK and MC quickly retaliated, however, proceeding to secure three wins in five rounds and take the match one victory, sending their powerful opponents into the defeated circle.

ViOLet and MaSa took on DRG and True, and struggled greatly against their opponents in the second match of the tournament. In the end, however, they were able to come out victorious and took on HuK and MC. Their opponents quickly secured the first and second wins of the set, and though they put up an epic fight, ViOLet and MaSa fell to the duo of friends.

Bomber and MMA entered the losers’ final as the crowds cheered on, and lived up to their notorious reputation as they destroyed DRG and True, then finished off ViOLet and MaSa to sweep  the losers’ final and earn the right to take on the powerful team of HuK and MC in a rematch.

This final match seemed to be a repeat of the first match as Bomber and MMA managed to secure the first win thanks to a flawless performance. HuK and MC again retaliated, securing the second win. Bomber and MMA then fell in the third round thanks to indecision affecting their play. The fourth round saw the team of Bomber and MMA starting out strong once again, but HuK and MC managed to continuously damage their  economy. Unable to find a way to slow this damage, the two fell to the friends, and thus HuK and MC were named the Red Bull Battle Grounds StarCraft II Champions.

Their mantra, “We’re the only players who are friends, all the other teammates hate each other” appears to have been successful and helped keep HuK and MC’s communication and strategies in sync and allowed the team to celebrate their first victory together.

Congratulations to this team for their spectacular performance!
