Today Grinding Gear Games was thrilled to announce that it has seen unprecedented sales of the recently introduced Supporter Packs for Path of Exile: The Awakening. These packs, for those unaware, provide several benefits for those who purchase them, including a key to get into the title’s Closed Beta.
Having been released in October 2013, Grinding Gear Games states that Path of Exile has “continued to be one of the most successful ‘ethical free to play’ games, with over 11.5 million players worldwide.” But what do they mean by “Ethical free to play”? The answer to that is actually quite simple: While several “Free to play” games turn into “Pay to win” titles, Path of Exile’s micro-transactions are for cosmetic items that do not alter character performance in any way. So while it thrives on these micro-transactions, it doesn’t become a “Pay to win” title that so many others fall into.
Grinding Gear has also revealed a new facet to the game, known as Divination Cards. These are a new type of item that will drop from monsters that you encounter as you play Path of Exile: The Awakening, and you can trade sets later in the game for special items that the cards reference.
If you decide to contribute to the Highland Supporter level, you will even be able to design your own Divination Cards, thus allowing you to put your own, personalized mark on the title.
