During the Hyrule Warriors themed Nintendo Direct presentation tonight, Nintendo revealed that the Demon King himself, Ganondorf, will join the roster of playable characters. Not only does this confirm that we get to play as the most iconic villain of the series, but in fact confirms that several of the villains will be playable. Characters that were revealed for this game previously like Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess’ Zant and Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword’s Ghirahim are now confirmed to be playable, as well as representing key villains in the story of the game. These characters join the current roster including Link, Zelda, Impa, Darunia, Ruto, Shiek, Midna, Agitha, Fi and new character Lana, putting the current roster at 13 characters.
Club Nintendo members that purchase and register Hyrule Warriors within the first four weeks of release will also be able to redeem a token for a free Demon King costume set, which will include Ocarina of Time and Twilight Princess costumes for Ganondorf. It was also revealed that pre-ordering from select retailers will earn players costume sets for Link and Zelda from Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, and Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword, though the details on exact retailers have yet to be announced. As mentioned in the Nintendo Direct, the game’s locales take most of their inspiration from said three Legend of Zelda titles, including Skyloft from Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword, or Lake Hylia from Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, just to name a couple of examples.
Aside from characters, we were given a lot of new details about the game. As I mentioned in my preview a few weeks ago, characters will level up, which will increase their health points or attack skill. There are also materials you can collect in the game to craft badges that enhance your weapons and give them more attacks, longer combos, or even extend the powered up “Focus Spirit”, which I briefly saw in my hands-on demo, but I don’t think it had an official name at that time. Some of the badges have skills that increase damage or the chance of finding hearts to refill your life points.
We also have news about a brand new Adventure Mode, based on the original Legend of Zelda, where completing challenges allows players to advance and unlock new items and even characters. Some of the weapons of the game can apparently only be used in this mode as well, so it’s encouraged that players try to unlock all of it’s secrets. Eiji Aonuma, Legend of Zelda series producer and supervisor of Hyrule Warriors, also gave several small details, like the Chain Chomp of Super Mario Bros. fame making a guest appearance as a weapon. He also mentioned that you can use the series’ infamous Cuccos to work in your favor and make them attack your enemies. Several more details were mentioned throughout the information heavy Nintendo Direct, but it seems like Hyrule Warriors will have plenty of content for Wii U owners to keep them busy until the new Legend of Zelda game releases for the system. Hyrule Warriors releases September 26th for the Nintendo Wii U. When we get more news about where to preorder for what costumes, we’ll be right there to let you know!
