Preview | Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker
After getting a glimpse at Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker during Nintendo’s E3 presentation, I knew that I just had to get some hands-on time with it and fortunately I did.
For those who played Super Mario 3D World, Captain Toad if you remember, made a brief appearance in the game, which let players break away from the general platforming gameplay, to some puzzle-platform levels. Now Nintendo is taking the concept of those levels and turning them into a full-fledged game.
At the Nintendo booth, the company had a pair of levels available to play, one of which took place in a desert environment. Now Toad has no major abilities. In fact, he can’t jump, or use any special items to put enemies in their place. What he can do however, is pick up and throw turnips, as well as fall (which does come into play), and players can rotate the cube-like levels to reveal new passageways and the like. You will need to make use of moving platforms and such help you progress through certain areas and I also came across a boss battle against a dragon. In this boss battle, I could only take cover from the dragon before being able to make my way to the top of the volcano mountain which ultimately collapsed, killing the dragon.
The levels seem quite short and sweet, though I wonder how elaborate they might get in later levels. Visually though, I’d have to say that the game looks extremely polished and gives you the same kind of detail that you see in Super Mario 3D World, as Nintendo is making sure that this game gets some TLC. In another level, I was able to get into a minecart, in what was an on-rails level. The TV screen gave me a third-person perspective, while the GamePad gave me a first-person perspective, where I could use turnips to toss them at enemies as well as to collect gems.
There’s not a whole lot more to say about the game since the demo was short and I’m curious to see if Nintendo can pull off this sort of title as a full game. With Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker scheduled for a Holiday 2014 release, I’ll be keeping me eyes on this one. Fortunately GotGame will be getting another demo of the game later this month, so we’ll keep you posted on whether or not it features new levels or not.
