Platinum, the developers behind Bayonetta and Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance, have opted to take on a new challenge, namely adapting the critically acclaimed animated series The Legend of Korra into a third-person action game.

The title, revealed yesterday, is heading to both Sony’s newest console, the PlayStation 4, and the PlayStation 3. It will, as the animated series does, fuse martial arts, varying philosophies and world cultures, and “an exquisite story that follows in the footsteps of Avatar: The Last Airbender.

The title follows Korra, the latest incarnation in a long line of peacekeepers meant to preserve the order between four nations and bridge the human world with the spirit world. It takes place after the events of Book Two, but before the upcoming Book Three. The game starts off as Korra has lost her ability to bend/manipulate the elements after encountering a shadowy force.

Because Korra can manipulate all four elements, you will be able to utilize different fighting styles which will each play a role on the battlefield. For instance, you will be able to throw whips of water in order to attack at a distance or even meet aggressive mobs with the slow and powerful earth techniques you will gain.

As you advance in the game, you will be able to level up your abilities, allowing you to access even more devastating abilities, such as summoning whirlwinds.

For those worrying that the title won’t feel authentic to the Avatar universe, it should be noted that Platinum has worked with the series creators to ensure that it will indeed. One of the show’s lead writers scripted the story, and the actors behind the characters on the show are returning to voice their game counterparts.
