Today Caravel Games has revelaed that the fifth title in their DROD puzzle-dungeon crawler franchise has arrived for pre-order and will arrive on July 1, 2014 for Mac, Windows, and Linux.

The game is a unique turn-based dungeon crawler played on a 2D grid. Many have described it as “Zelda Chess”, and campaigns are comprised of a series of interconnecting rooms and levels. Every area is a unique, hand-crafted puzzle that you must solve by clearing out the monster while avoiding the deathtraps.

The newest title in the franchise, The Second Sky, is the conclusion of Beethro Budkin’s story. He is a professional dungeon exterminator and you must guide him as he goes up against the underground Rooted Empire in a race against time against the ominous Grand Event. Beethro is fond of saying, “There is no problem that can’t be solve with a really big sword,” but he will need to use a variety of weapons and tactics to survive this time.

The developers claim that TSS pushes the unique DROD puzzle formula to the limit, introducing several new game mechanics and improving production values in every way possible over previous entries. The game features an integrated online Hints-and-Solutions system that will allow you to easily check up on all of the help ever given for a particular puzzle, and if you are the first needing help, it allows you to quickly and specifically ask for what you need thanks to customized, labeled room diagrams.

In addition, the game features a series of overworld maps that allows you to quickly travel to multiple game areas. All told, it features new puzzle elements, enhanced level crafting abilities, new weapons, twelve environmental terrain styles and soundtracks, real-time lighting, and a range of environmental effects, all of which serve to enhance the puzzle solving experience of DROD.

Can you help Beethro win?
