Today GMT Games launched a new Kickstarter campaign for Twilight Struggle, their critically acclaimed war strategy board game. This campaign specifically aims to bring the game to PC, Mac, Linux, Android, and iOS devices, and has a goal of $50,000 to fund the digital version’s development.

For those who are unaware of the game, it simulates the conflicts between the USA and USSR during the Cold War era. You must spread the influence of the countries throughout the world using the actual events of history in order to rewrite the outcome in your own favor.

The game, which was released in 2005, has won nearly a dozen awards, including multiple “Game of the Year” awards from various organizations.

Gene Billingsly, founder of GMT Games, stated, “Fans of Twilight Struggle wait no longer. With Playdek’s development and the support of our fans on Kickstarter, we will make our dream of a digital version of Twilight Struggle a reality so fans can play the game whenever, wherever, and with whoever they want. We know that with your strong support we can make this happen.”

He went on to state, “Playdek has established itself as one of the key players in the digital space and is known for the elegance of their User Interfaces, their approach to creating AI, their attention to detail, and their dedication to customer satisfaction. As players we are among their admirers. When the opportunity arose to have them create the digital version of Twilight Struggle with us, we were thrilled, honored, and really excited. We’re grateful to have the talents and experience of Playdek at our side.”

For those wondering if Playdek shares Mr. Billingsly’s optimism, you’ll be interested to note that Joel Goodman, Playdek’s CEO, stated, “Twilight Struggle is a game we know and love at Playdek. We support this Kickstarter campaign to help bring this fantastic game to digital platforms to make it more accessible and available to all kinds of gamers. We also know the core fan base has been waiting and with your help we can help GMT reach its goal.”

In addition to their excitement, GMT has designed a special award that brings the game’s designers Ananda Gupta and Jason Matthews together once again. They have created a new expansion for the game called Twilight Struggle: What If? Backers will get a digital, physical, or both copies of this expansion, depending on their tier.

What are your thoughts on this campaign? If you’ve played the board game, do you believe that it deserves a digital version?
