Faithful readers may recall the report last month about Disney cutting hundreds of jobs. Today they’ve decided to lay off 700 more employees from their gaming division, which is roughly 26% of their staff.
These layoffs occur mostly in their mobile, social, and web-based gaming portions of the division, and when asked, Disney Interactive President James A. Pitaro stated, “These are large-scale changes as we focus not just on getting to profitability but sustained profitability and scalability.”
He went on to state that Disney Interactive, which published about two dozen games last year, would cut annual game output by as much as 50 percent. Said Mr. Pitaro, “We’re not exiting any businesses, and we will pursue licensing partnerships in which we retain a lot of creative input.”
