Warner Bros. and Mojang in talks to create Minecraft movie

by on February 27, 2014

Warner Bros. is in talks with Mojang to create a Minecraft film, Markus “Notch” Persson confirmed on Twitter today.

“Negotiations have been going on for a while,” Persson told Game Informer, “but I have no idea what the status of those negotiations are, or how likely the movie is to happen.”

Deadline reports that Warner Bros. acquired the rights to make the film and that The Lego Movie producer Roy Lee, who heads up Vertigo Entertainment, is overseeing the project.

As of this week, the PC version of Minecraft has over 100 million registered users with 14.3 percent of them who have purchased the game. That equates to 14.3 million copies sold on PC alone, and that’s not counting the millions it’s sold across Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, iOS, and Android. The game will launch on PlayStation Vita, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One later this year.

Given the success of The Lego Movie, the world might be ready for another block-based movie.
