Disney to lay off several hundred employees, mostly in the Playdom unit.
Today we’ve learned that Disney Interactive, the video game portion of the company, is planning to lay off “several hundred” employees, which will primarily consist in their Playdom social games division.
There seem to be two reasons for this. The first is that after being acquired by Disney in 2010, Playdom has struggled to release a string of successful franchises, with the exception of Marvel: Avengers Alliance. This, coupled with the success of Disney Infinity, their action-figure based console gaming franchise, has led the company to conclude that Playdom is just sucking up funds that would be better utilized in other portions of the company.
First LucasArts, now Playdom. What is the future for Disney Interactive?
