Sony announces plans to shut down four MMORPGs
Today Sony Online Entertainment has decided to shut down four somewhat popular massively multiplayer online role-playing games. Specifically they will be shutting down Free Realms, Star Wars: Clone Wars Adventures, Vanguard: Saga of Heroes, and Wizardry Online.
Some gamers may be wondering why, exactly, these games are going to be removed. Well, this afternoon Michele Cagle sent a statement to our friends at Kotaku explaining why each game will be shut down.
Free Realms, the first free-to-play MMO that was shut down today was closed because it “has reached a point in its life cycle where players are moving on to other games”. Sony plans to keep the game running until March 31, 2014.
Next up is Star Wars: Clone Wars Adventures, which is going to be shut down on the same date as Free Realms and for the same reason, according to Cagle.
Vanguard of Heroes, which is perhaps one of, if not the, longest-running games that will be shut down soon, is going to be closing due to the decreasing player population and the increasing costs of updating the game. The game will shut down on July 31, 2014.
The final game is Wizardry Online, which will also close on July 31, 2014. This is the one game that Cagle did not give a reason for the closing, however, so we can’t really provide details there.
What do you think of the four games shutting down?
