CES: ASUS developing a tablet-smartphone hybrid

ASUS announced at CES a new device called the Padfone X, which will be a smartphone and a tablet that can join together.

The PadFone X will feature a 5-inch full HD smartphone that activates a 9-inch full HD tablet when the phone is docked. It will run on Android KitKat 4.4. and features a brushed metal frame, a soft-touch back cover and dual front speakers.

Users can also choose between the two screen sizes depending on what app they are using at the time. ASUS will be making the hybrid available exclusively through AT&T and will support 4G LTE.

“AT&T and ASUS share a passion for innovation and we are very excited to bring the ASUS PadFone X to the U.S market,” said Jonney Shih, chairman, ASUS. “Our technology is capable of instantly turning a premium smartphone into a tablet, giving consumer the ultimate experience on both devices. Together, we look forward to bringing more choices to consumers.”

No additional details were provided as it relates to pricing, detailed specs or a release date, but we expect to hear more about it in the coming months.
