It seems that Sony may be looking at providing a cloud-based emulation service, according to a patent that cropped up yesterday.

This patent, discovered by our friends at IGameResponsibly, is described as “methods providing developers to ‘quite easily’ create mini-games within cloud-based, emulated legacy titles. It’s called ‘Suspending State of Cloud-based Legacy Applications. The present disclosure is related to video game emulation. Among other things, this application describes a method and apparatus for emulating a video game that includes generating snapshots that can be used for incorporating new content into the emulated video games.”

It sounds like the patent will be utilized to stream classic games on Sony’s newest console while adding in mini-games and perhaps trophy support and similar extras to the classics. We’ll keep you updated as we learn more, but what are your thoughts on this patent?
