So now that we have the full list of award winners of the Spike VGX, we beg the question: are you in agreement or not?
Certainly in many of the categories, the eventual winners seemed like no-brainers, but we also ended up with a few surprised, at least as far as we’re concerned.
Below, you’ll find a list of the winners, as well as some of our own thoughts, and we’d love to hear what you think and which games you feel deserved to win.
Most Anticipated Game (Viewer Voted)
- Titanfall
- Destiny
- South Park: The Stick of Truth
- The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt
- Watch_Dogs
Thoughts: This one was a fun one to see develop, as you would’ve thought that Bungie’s Destiny would be leading the pack, but after more and more positive previews for Titanfall had been published since E3, the game has picked up a ton of steam and is easily one of the Xbox One’s best looking future titles.
Character of the Year (Viewer Voted)
- The Lutece Twins (BioShock Infinite)
- Lara Croft (Tomb Raider)
- Trevor Philips (Grand Theft Auto V)
- Naiee and Nyaa (Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons)
Best Mobile Game (Viewer Voted)
- Plants vs. Zombies 2: It’s About Time
- Angry Birds Star Wars
- Infinity Blade 3
- Ridiculous Fishing
Thoughts: We’ve played each one of these games and while Infinity Blade 3 is pretty awesome, especially on the iPad Air and iPad mini with Retina display, PvZ 2 is non-stop fun and it doesn’t cost you a dime!

Game of the Year
- Grand Theft Auto V
- BioShock Infinite
- Super Mario 3D World
- The Last of Us
- Tomb Raider
Thoughts: This was a tough one and GTA V was easily one of the best games in 2013. But still, there’s something about The Last of Us that really gained our attention and love and was unlike anything else we played this year, which is why we feel it should’ve gotten the nod over Rockstar’s latest baby. Super Mario 3D World is also pretty damn amazing, but we’re glad it at least made it on the list of nominees.
Studio of the Year
- Naughty Dog
- Irrational Games
- Rockstar North
- The Fullbright Company
Thoughts: Studio of the Year sounds about right, so why didn’t The Last of Us get voted best game?
Best Shooter
- BioShock Infinite
- Battlefield 4
- Call of Duty: Ghosts
- Metro: Last Light
Thoughts: This was a no-brainer for us, as Bioshock Infinite was bad ass. COD: Ghosts is fun, as is Battlefield 4, but both have seen their share of issues especially on next-gen so they feel unfinished.

Best Action Adventure Game
- Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag
- Grand Theft Auto V
- The Last of Us
- Tomb Raider
Thoughts: We’d say GTA V and The Last of Us were both better games than AC IV, but when you take into account that we’re looking more at the adventure aspect of it, Assassin’s Creed IV does have the upper hand.
Best Sports Game
- NBA 2K14
- FIFA 14
- MLB 13: The Show
- NHL 14
Thoughts: You really couldn’t go wrong with either game, and there shouldn’t be a loser in this category, but the gameplay, and presentation of NBA 2K14 did stand out, if only just slightly, especially on the Xbox One and PS4.
Best Independent Game
- Gone Home
- Kentucky Route Zero
- Papers, Please
- The Stanley Parable
Best RPG
- Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch
- Final Fantasy XIV Online: A Realm Reborn
- Fire Emblem: Awakening
- Pokemon X/Y
Thoughts: We’re sure the Pokemon faithful would have something to say about this one.
Best Fighting Game
- Injustice: Gods Among Us
- Divekick
- Killer Instinct
- Tekken Revolution
Thoughts: Killer Instinct is fun and looks great but doesn’t feel like a complete experience. Injustice on the other hand, is easily the sickest fighting game this year, regardless of what platform you’re playing it on.

Best Driving Game
- Forza Motorsport 5
- F1 2013
- GRID 2
- Need for Speed Rivals
Thoughts: This was a slam dunk for Forza 5, although NFS: Rivals is quite enjoyable.
Best DLC
- Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon
- Borderlands 2: Tiny Tina’s Assault on Dragon Keep
- Dishonored: The Knife of Dunwall
- Mass Effect 3: Citadel
Thoughts: When Blood Dragon released earlier this year, many of us were already calling it the best DLC in years.
Best Xbox Game
- Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons
- BioShock Infinite
- Grand Theft Auto V
- Tomb Raider
Thoughts: Brothers was an under-the-radar game with a really cool story and was certainly distinct. But better than GTA V or Bioshock Infinite? Man, not sure about that one. How did you guys feel about this?

Best PlayStation Game
- The Last of Us
- Grand Theft Auto V
- Rayman Legends
- Tomb Raider
Thoughts: Another no-brainer!
Best Nintendo Game
- Super Mario 3D World
- Pikmin 3
- Rayman Legends
- The Wonderful 101
Thoughts: Super Mario 3D World may be the best Mario game in years. It takes plenty of chances, looks great, plays amazingly, and lets you play how you want to without hand holding you much. For us, this is the best Wii U game and straight up Nintendo game in 2013.
Best PC Game
- Gone Home
- Battlefield 4
- Papers, Please
- The Stanley Parable

Best Handheld Game
- The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds
- Animal Crossing: New Leaf
- Pokemon X/Y
- Tearaway
Thoughts: We wholeheartedly agreed with this one as The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds has become of of our most favorite Zelda games ever. It was challenging, touched on the nostalgic feelings of A Link to the Past, and offered up some unique puzzles while remaining charming.
Best Casual Game
- Animal Crossing: New Leaf
- Disney Infinity
- Plants vs. Zombies 2: It’s About Time
- Skylanders Swap Force
Best Voice Actor
- Troy Baker as Joel (The Last of Us)
- Troy Baker as Booker DeWitt (BioShock Infinite)
- Steven Ogg as Trevor Philips (Grand Theft Auto V)
- Willem Dafoe as Nathan Dawkins (Beyond: Two Souls)
Best Voice Actress
- Ashley Johnson as Ellie (The Last of Us)
- Courtnee Draper as Elizabeth (BioShock Infinite)
- Camilla Luddington as Lara Croft (Tomb Raider)
- Ellen Page as Jodie Holmes (Beyond: Two Souls)
Best Soundtrack
- Grand Theft Auto V
- BioShock Infinite
- Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch
- The Last of Us
Thoughts: Slam dunk!
Best Song in a Game
- “Will the Circle be Unbroken” performed by Courtnee Draper & Troy Baker (BioShock Infinite)
- “A.D.H.D.” performed by Kendrick Lamar (Grand Theft Auto V)
- “Sleepwalking” performed by The Chain Gang of 1974 (Grand Theft Auto V)
- “Survival” performed by Eminem (Call of Duty: Ghosts)
Now we want to hear who you thought deserved each of these awards, or if there’s a particular game that you think got shafted.
