Altered Beast

The Nintendo Virtual Consoles are taking the concept of “Throwback Thursday” to the extreme this week, with the 3DS Virtual Console awash in Sega classics, and the Wii U Virtual Console reviving a long-forgotten favorite.

Opening up the eShop on the 3DS, you may feel like you’re looking at the video game shelf of your local KB Toys store in 1991 while rockin’ your British Knights and listening to Color Me Badd. Remastered Sega titles have landed on Nintendo’s portable, including Sonic the Hedgehog and Altered Beast. Both titles have been redesigned to take advantages of the 3DS’s autostereoscopic abilities, so when those eyeballs fly out of that plant thing at the end of level two, it’s… well, it’s an eye-popping effect. (Thank you, I’ll be here all week.)

DK3

The holiday classic character sale on the Virtual Consoles also continues. This week the spotlight lands on our main monkey, Donkey Kong, with DK’s classic titles selling at 30% off. Both consoles are featuring the original Donkey Kong and the follow-up with DK’s original offspring, Donkey Kong Jr. His further adventures can be found on the 3DS with Game & Watch: Donkey Kong Jr., while the groovy gorilla bothers landscaper Stanley in Donkey Kong 3 on the Wii U.

If you’re looking for something more modern, the 3DS also features this week Brilliant Hamsters!, Hooked on Bass Fishing, and the movie tie-in Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs 2.
