Bad news for those who enjoy renting games and movies from stores. Blockbuster has recently announced that it will conclude its US retail and DVD mail efforts by “early January 2014”.

This will result in the closing of around 300 US-based retail stores and the distribution centers of the company. As for the reason why they are doing so, Dish President and CEO Joseph Clayton explains, “Consumer demand is clearly moving to digital distribution of video entertainment. We continue to see value in the Blockbuster brand, and we expect to leverage that brand as we continue to expand our digital offerings.”

For those unaware, the digital offerings he speaks of include the Blockbuster @Home service for Dish customers and the general access, individual transaction-based Blockbuster On Demand. It’s also been confirmed that Dish will retain Blockbuster’s “key assets, including the company’s significant video library.”

What are your thoughts on the end of Blockbuster stores?
