A gamer found the process of attempting to track down and capture shiny Pokemon in the new games rather tedious, and decided to do something about it. What did he do? Why he built a machine that would find these Pokemon for him!

This idea sounds a bit odd, but the video below shows off dekuNukem’s handiwork, who developed a “hands free shiny finder” in order to help him locate these rare Pokemon. The device enters Pokemon enconters via a microcontroller hooked up on the console via certain button presses.

Once it has entered the encounter, the machine utilizes a light sensor to measure how long the bottom screen is blacked out for an encounter. For players of the games, when you encounter a shiny Pokemon, your bottom screen remains blacked out for longer than a typical battle. This is because shiny Pokemon have special animations.

If the machine determines that the encounter isn’t a shiny one, it will run away and track down another Pokemon. If it is a shiny, it sounds an alarm, alerting the gamer to come by and attempt to capture it.

What do you think of this shiny finder?

Thanks, Kotaku.
