Any Zelda movie would have to be playable, says Eiji Aonuma

Zelda movie would be playable.

Zelda movie would be playable.

Gamers may remember a previous attempt at creating a movie based on a Nintendo franchise. This attempt was rather horrible, and resulted in what is widely considered one of the worst movies ever to be made. That’s right, we’re speaking of Super Mario Bros.

But what if a Legend of Zelda movie were to be made? Would it be just as horrible? Well, we may find out, as Mr. Aonuma has said there have been ideas for a Zelda film adaptation that have been batted around. He does stress, however, that if one is ever made, it can’t be a standard movie where you just go in, sit down, and watch. He states that the movie would have to be playable.
Speaking with Kotaku, he stated, “If we were to make a Zelda title, if we had interest in doing that, I think really what would be most important to us is to be able to play with the format of a movie, make it more interactive, like you’re able to take your 3DS into the theater and that leads you into participating in it somehow. We wouldn’t want to make it the same as any other movie. We want to somehow change what a movie is.”

If this sounds somewhat familiar to you, it may be because Disney actually tried something similar recently. There appears to be no definitive verdict on if the idea was successful or not, however.

Will a Zelda movie truly be made, and if so, will it be interactive? Would you prefer this style of movie, or would you prefer the “Sit-down-and-watch” fare?

Thanks, Kotaku.
