The Passing of a Giant

Hiroshi Yamauchi

The news broke this morning that long-time Nintendo President Hiroshi Yamauchi had passed away. The man, who ran Nintendo for more than 50 years and led the transition from the companies playing card roots to video game giant was 85 years old when he died. An official statement lists the cause of death as pneumonia. Yamauchi died in a hospital in Central Japan.

You cannot minimize the impact of Yamauchi. He spearheaded Nintendo from 1949 – 2002 and the man was responsible for the development of the Nintendo family gaming console and the Game Boy portable console. Reputed as a visionary and among the richest men in Japan, Yamauchi made key moves such as employing the talents of Shigeru Miyamoto, a global star of game design and the brainchild of Nintendo hits such as Super Mario and Donkey Kong.

It would take a significant amount of space for me to properly recognize the contribution that Yamauchi made to gaming – but needless to say there isn’t a single person who visits this website who hasn’t had their life in some way impacted by something that Yamauchi did. Everyone here at GotGame sends our regards to the Yamauchi family.
