Microsoft have performed yet another u-turn and announced that only the European Day One edition of the Xbox One will get a free copy of FIFA 14.
When it was originally announced to much surprise at Gamescom, Microsoft confirmed via their official Xbox Twitter account that it would be free to all European Xbox One pre-orders, whether they were Day One or not.
Earlier today Graeme Boyd, Microsoft’s social marketing manager, confirmed that only Day One editions would be getting the free game and that it would come in the form of a download code. He also confirmed that it was currently only the European pre-orders that were getting FIFA 14 free, though there may be further announcements down the line.
Last month the large UK retailer GAME announced that they would be accepting Day One pre-orders in store for one day only. Though it hasn’t been confirmed as to how many extra pre-orders the Gamescom announcement has garnered, it does seem likely that some people will have pre-ordered their standard versions of the console on the basis that they would be getting the game free. As of writing there were still some Day One Editions available online.
We’ve contacted GAME to find out if those who pre-ordered after the Gamescom announcement will automatically be updated to the Day One Edition or whether some customers will miss out on the deal now. We’ll update you when we get a reply.
