Fan attempts to remake Final Fantasy VII in 2D.
Lucas Brown, an Australian web developer, has started building his own two-dimensional remake of Square’s classic RPG, Final Fantasy VII.
Mr. Brown states that though he doesn’t plan to recreate everything in Final Fantasy VII, he has remade the menu and battle systems in “excruciating detail” and hopes to have the first mission finished and playable in the near future.
Mr. Brown continues on to state that he has been working on this project on and of since 2008, and is utilizing a customized scripting language so that he can truly recreate every mechanic of the game, from AI to limit breaks. Said Mr. Brown, “Over the years I’ve seen many people attempt a 2D remake of FF VII and fail, so I thought I’d try do it right. My core goal is to make the FF VII that would’ve existed if it was developed in 2D instead of 3D.”
Will he be successful where so many others have failed? Or will his personal life, now occupied by full-time work and a girlfriend he cares for, cause him to relegate this project to the recycle bin?
