Two new titles in June are topping the NPD list this month.
The Last of Us took top honors in June, with Animal Crossing: New Leaf coming in second. The retail release of Minecraft on Xbox 360 came in third. Meanwhile, Deadpool debuted at No. 8.
As far as hardware goes, the 3DS moved “nearly 225,000” units last month, cementing it as the top piece of hardware. The Xbox 360 stayed top in the home console race, selling 140,000 units.
The newest piece of hardware, the Ouya, didn’t have a strong start according to the NPD.
“Retail sales for Ouya (not counting direct sales through ouya.tv) and were relatively light for a new console,” an NPD analyst Liam Callahan said in a statement. “This may be due to the lack of a major marquee title driving consumers to seek out the console, low awareness due to Ouya being a new brand, or low inventory volume due to manufacturing constraints.”
In response, Ouya CEO Julie Uhrman said, “Nobody thinks much about NPD numbers since we all know they miss critical data including reporting from digital retailers or company sites. OUYA sold every unit available launch week and are currently still chasing demand.”
Overall, the industry made $593.3 million from retail locations, a 14 percent decrease from last year.
