Planetside 2 pay-to-win buffs cancelled due to fan outcry.
Sony Online Entertainment decided to scrap their plans to utilize paid-for buffs, also called “implants” in the massively multiplayer online shooter Planetside 2.
This decision was made after fans filled several threads with negative feedback on the planned feature. Due to this feedback, Sony Online Entertainment president John Smedley stated on Twitter, “After reading through your comments we have decided to go back to the drawing board on implants. They will not be coming with forthcoming update GU13.”
Why were gamers so afraid of this feature? They were afraid that charging real-world money for limited-time buffs would not only upset the game’s economy, but also go against Sony’s previous promise that the only paid-for items within the game would be cosmetic. Specifically the promise that Matt Higby, Planetside 2’s creative director, had promised last year that they would not be implmenting a “pay-to-win” strategy for the game.
Stated Mr. Higby, “Anything that affects gameplay, such as grenades or medkits or implants that give you additional power within the game, will be exclusively unlocked via in-game resources.”
What will Sony do in regards to the implants now?
