Super Smash Bros. almost removed from Evo 2013

Super Smash Bros. Melee almost wasn’t a part of Evo 2013.

When it was announced that Melee was the fan’s choice to be played this year, Nintendo wanted the game completely removed, according to a statement made on Live On Three by co-founder and Evo organizer Joey Cuellar.

“They were not only trying to shut down the stream, they were trying to shut down the event, the smash portion of the event,” Cuellar said. “It’s their IP, they can do what they want and they didn’t present us with any options to keep it open.”

While Nintendo eventually allowed the game to be played, they did not want it to be streamed, a decision Nintendo quickly changed after fighting fans lambasted the decision.

“We’re super grateful to Nintendo for letting us do it,” Cuellar said.
