Deus Ex: The Fall won’t work on a jailbroken device

Deus Ex: The Fall, the new iOS game by Square Enix, has been reported to stop working on jailbroken devices, Eurogamer reports.

When a player attempts to fire a gun in the game a message pops up saying, “We are sorry but you can’t fire on jailbroken devices,” an image which was captured by Reddit user KipEnyan. Reports also came in via the iOS store where other commentators noted the same thing.

The most frustrating party is that this occurs during a tutorial where you have to fire tranquillizer darts at guards in order to progress, essentially meaning that players cannot play the game. Square Enix seem to have assumed that anyone playing on a jailbroken device must have pirated the game, even though it is legal in the US to jailbreak a phone. While it will void a warranty, it doesn’t necessarily mean that people have pirated the game.

As some of the comments have mentioned, many people in fact bought the game legally meaning that their $6.99 purchase doesn’t work. Understandably many are now asking for refunds.
