Blizzard reportedly interested in bringing micro-transactions to World of Warcraft
Blizzard are reportedly considering introducing micro-transactions into World of Warcraft, according to MCV.
The topic came up in the community forums where Jonathon Brown, a community representative, wrote, “We are currently exploring the possibility of adding a way for players in certain regions to make purchases directly within the game. As part of this process, elements related to this will be appearing on the PTR. We’ll provide additional updates on our plans as development progresses.”
This comes after the discovery in the puclic test server of a scroll that gave users the ability to double the amount of XP that they accumulate in the game. Polygon notes that it referred back to an in-game store.
World of Warcraft has been struggling for users since 2010 when subscribers hit a peak of 12 million. There are believed to now be 8.3 million subscribers after the loss of around 1.3 million in the first 3 months of 2013. With MMOs expected to become more popular when the next generation of consoles are released, it’s little surprise that Blizzard are keen to explore new avenues to create money.
