EA is confident that the next wave of tablets will almost match PS3 and 360 in graphics.
IGN UK reported yesterday that Electronic Arts claims that the next wave of tablets will feature graphics close to what the PlayStation 3 can produce.
Gibeau, EA Labels president, spoke about both how EA is approaching mobile development and how he believes tablet games will evolve. Said Gibeau, “In the near future, the next wave of tablets and phones will have nearly Xbox 360 or PS3 capabilities in terms of graphics.”
He went on to state that, “Some of our engine technology that used to be console-specific now can, with modifications, be able to power games on tablets and on phones in the near future. We’re just getting ready for that.”
Gibeau does admit that it won’t be just a straight port, even if the tablets do reach this level. He explains that, “You have to redesign the game. You can’t just bring it over and have a virtual D-pad on the tablet. It doesn’t work. You have to re-architect it around touch, voice, camera.”
Is Gibeau’s confidence in the abilities of upcoming tablets well founded? Or is he overestimating how powerful the next wave will be?
