Microsoft Not Releasing Xbox One in Japan in 2013

New XBOX ONE

During Microsoft Japan’s corporate strategy meeting for the 2014 fiscal year there was not much talk about the Xbox One, which lead many to start speculation about the Xbox One not releasing in Japan this year.

After the meeting, 4gamer.net, was able to get an interview with Microsoft Japan’s President and CEO Yasuyuki Higuchi. Higuchi confirmed the speculation by stating that Japan was considered a “tier 2” country by Microsoft. This means that the Xbox One will come out in the second wave of releases slated for early 2014. This also confirms that Microsoft never planned to do a worldwide release for the Xbox One.

Microsoft has seemingly gone out of its way to state that Japan is important in previous interviews. However, this controversial decision would continue to indicate that Microsoft does not value the Japanese gaming market as much as Sony does. No wonder the Xbox brand is not very popular in Japan. Higuchi’s final words of the interview only further corroborate that very theory.

“Yes, please don’t report too negatively.”

I’m sure that plea fell on deaf ears.
