Sony seem to be planning two new versions of the PlayStation 3 after applying for certification on two new model numbers.
CVG notes that the RRA numbers, “CECH-4205B” and “CECH-4205C”, are very similar to the number for the most recent version of the PS3 – dubbed the “super-slim” – which is model number “CECH-4000”. This would imply that the revisions would be minor internal changes rather than another radical redesign.
Despite this, Sony have already said that they have no current plans for a PS3 price cut. Fergal Gara, boss of SCE UK, was talking to Gamesindustry recently and said, “The PlayStation 3 is a system where it hasn’t been particularly easy to get the costs down.” He went on to say, “We continue to look at opportunities, there may or may not be any more, I genuinely can’t answer to that.”
However, with only a few months until the release of the PS4 – priced at £349 – it would seem likely that there will be some kind of revision to the price to avoid Sony competing with itself with two consoles.
