E3 2013: Sony America CEO: The Last Guardian ‘on hiatus right now’
The Last Guardian, despite the rumors and a listing on an official E3 website, didn’t appear at Sony’s press conference on Monday. Speaking to Game Trailers, Sony America CEO Jack Tretton said the game still exists, but is “on hiatus right now.”
Created by Shadow of the Colossus developer Team Ico, a division of Sony Computer Entertainment Japan Studio, The Last Guardian was originally revealed at the Tokyo Game Show in 2009 for a release in 2011. After missing its date, the status of the game has been murky.
“I think the cool thing about our worldwide development studios is we have so many projects out there from so many great teams,” Tretton said, “Projects never ultimately go away, so The Last Guardian has certainly not gone away, but it’s on hiatus right now.”
The game’s Creative Director Fumito Ueda left Sony in December 2011, but he remains on the project by contract. In February, Ueda said people should “keep an eye out” for a release date.
