Halo: Spartan Assault is real, coming to Windows 8 PCs, tablets, and phones this July

The secret is out. Halo: Spartan Assault, a twin-stick shooter with hooks to Halo 4, is coming to Windows 8 PCs, tablets and phones.

The game is being developed by both 343 Industries and Vanguard Games, the studio responsible for Greed Corp. and Gatling Gears. It will be released in July for $6.99 across all platforms. The Windows 8 Phone version will be sold separately from the Windows 8 PC and tablets versions. Expect touch controls on the phones and tablets, and Xbox 360 controller support on PC and Surface devices.

Halo: Spartan Assault bridges the gap between Halo 3 and 4, following the adventures of Commander Sarah Palmer, who we met in Halo 4, and Spartan Davis aboard the UNSC Infinity.

You can earn XP, achievements, emblems, and some other unannounced things that tie into Halo 4. The game will have leaderboards and weekly challenges like its console brethren too.

The game will include in-app purchases like currency, weapons, and armor abilities.

Here’s what the controls will look like on a tablet and presumably a phone held horizontally.
