Naughty Dog confirms that their upcoming PS4 games will utilize the current Uncharted engine
Naughty Dog to utilize Last of Us engine for PS4
As Digital Spy posted earlier today, Naughty Dog has confirmed that their PlayStation 4 games will utilize the same engine that Uncharted and The Last of Us employed.
Bruce Straley, Game Director at Naughty Dog, explained that the reason for this is that they made a huge mistake when moving from the PlayStation 2 to the PlayStation 3. This mistake was scrapping the engine that they already had (to be specific, the engine used to build the Jak and Daxter series) and create a completely new one for the first Uncharted game.
Straley went on to clarify his words, “We learned our lesson in saying, as we move into development into next-gen, we want to take our current engine, port it immediately over as is and say, ‘Okay, we have a great AI system, we have a good rendering system.
We have all these things that already work. Only when we hit a wall will we say, ‘When do we need to change something? When do we need to scale it?”
Will their strategy work, or will it cause several new mistakes to be made in the PlayStation 4 generation?
