Dead Island: Riptide commercial banned in Australia

As reported on Kotaku earlier this morning,  the Australian Advertising Standards Board has banned the below Dead Island: Riptide commercial for using “images which are strongly suggestive of suicide”.

The game’s publisher attempted to fight the judgment, pointing out the fact that the commercial is intended to show the desolate terror that will afflict the characters in-game. The publisher states that he believes that it “is contextually relevant to the product being advertised, as it conveys the hopelessness of the games’ characters as they are faced with the overwhelming horror and violence of vast numbers of zombies hunting them, without actually depicting the violence of zombie vs character interaction in the game.”

The AASB responded that they noted the fantasy content and stylised nature of the content. In the end, however, they decided that the depiction of suicide is not justifiable, no matter the context, and as such, the commercial will remain banned.

Do you believe they made the right call?
