While Square-Enix continues to ignore Final Fantasy fans qualms of “We just want a HD version of FF VII,” nothing stopped the company from re-releasing the much beloved game on PC as a “remastered” version, even though the game had been available on PC for what seems like forever. The game featured achievements and special boosts but nothing new in the form of updated graphics.
So, once again amidst all the next-gen console talk and a relative need for Square-Enix to “wow” their fans comes a report that may surprise many in a different way. According to Famitsu and DSO Gaming, Final Fantasy VIII will also be getting a “Re-Mastered” version of the game on PC.
The report comes from a Steam Achievement Leak, which entails things such as “drawing magic” and unlocking GF’s which are obvious allusions to FF VIII. This is also surprising because Steam contains nothing in their system about the FF VII remaster which has been out for a few months now.
Famitsu states that fans should expect the FF VIII remaster to be similar to the FFVII one, in that it will only feature new in-game boosts and achievements with no updates to the graphics. There is no confirmation of a release date yet for the PS 1 classic though.
I am a huge fan of Final Fantasy and even though I may be in the minority, I do believe they have an inherent reason to re-release these games because those old PC versions are not the easiest things to find nowadays. Anyone should be able to understand that Square-Enix stands to make a lot of money if and when, they release HD versions of these PS 1 classics on a console. If they go ahead and “remaster” them on PC now, they will be losing big money by not doing a remake on consoles as well.
